Calverton fair

I was born in 1983 and grew up in Calverton. One of the things I remember about being a child in Calverton is the area where The Hollins and Clover Fields are now. There used to be a big field all full of puppies, and it was really beautiful to sort of bike past all year round. And the best time of year was in October when the fair used to come. I always remember walking down with my friends and it was really exciting going to the fair in Calverton. It was the time when you could still actually win a goldfish like a real live goldfish that you could take away and carry away in a bag with some water. And I remember one of my favourite rides at Calverton fair was something called the Devil's Chariot. We were always really quite frightened of it. It was like a spinning cylinder and on top of it there was like a devil which used to move and rotate and it had a pitchfork and it always had a really loud siren that you could hear from a long way away. And when you got into the cylinder it used to rock backwards and forwards and it used to make it feel like you were spinning round and round and going upside down. And I remember that all my friends used to laugh because when we were laughing it made our teeth glow in the dark. So that's a really happy memory of Calverton for me.
